Introducing Shaolin Kung Fu Fighter and Martial Artist Dom D

Dom is a 5 x British National Sanda Kickboxing Champion who has a 3rd Dan black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu as well as being a 35th generation Shaolin fighting disciple. As well as this, he is also a qualified personal trainer specialising in strength and mobility, martial arts and gymnastics and full body workouts.

How long have you been training in martial arts and what do you love about it?

I started Western style kickboxing and then switched to Taekwondo which felt like a more holistic style of exercise with emphasis on breathing, forms and tradition. I then went along to a Shaolin Monk’s class in London and although it was impossibly hard, I decided to keep going until I could finish a session without dying. Over the years I began to train there more and more which lead me to fighting at the World Games. Now I’ve been studying martial arts for 22 years and I’ve met my best friends at training. I’ve faced some big fears and challenged myself, pushed myself and found out what sort of person I could be.

What is your biggest client success story?

My most rewarding client story is when I trained an 87 year old man who had suffered serious falls and therefore found it difficult to walk. I taught him to get up off the floor unassisted and he can now move with more confidence which has given him back some of his independence.

What is your top tip for someone just starting out in martial arts?

Find a good teacher. You can learn a technique from anyone but real martial arts training should be inspiring! Find a bad teacher and they might put you off training for life!

How do you keep a balanced diet?

Generally I follow the rule that if my great grandparents wouldn’t know what it was I’ve got no business eating it, i.e. processed foods. I dip in and out of a keto diet to keep myself healthy but I’ve found it doesn’t support my level of activity enough to sustain it for extended periods… having said that, ‘Everything in moderation… including moderation!’

Where is your favourite place to travel?

South East Asia always works. Good food, friendly people, culture and amazing landscapes.

Introducing Pietro L: Personal Trainer and Movement Specialist

Pietro is a personal trainer and movement specialist with expertise in lower back pain and workout routines for weight loss and fat loss. With over 6 years experience in group fitness classes and one to one personal training, he is an expert in providing a full body workout and creating workout plans to achieve your fitness goals.

What is your background in fitness?

I always been passionate about endurance sport and “body movement”, with many years of experience as a master swimmer and triathlon participant. I have completed several regional and national Olympic distance triathlon events in Italy. I have always been keen on helping friends and as many people as possible  to improve their movements and to “understand” their body and take cake of it. This is my life, I can’t imagine another way to live my life!

What is your top tip for someone just starting their fitness journey?

Explore the elegance of your body. No matter who you are, what your age is, or your background. There is always space to improve and discover something new in your body as well as in your mind. Keep moving forward and have fun!

How do you keep yourself motivated?

I always try to remember the reasons I started doing what I do and the effort I put in to get here. This gives me so much motivation and inspiration to keep going.  Another thing I like to do is to reward myself every time I achieve a particular goal which spurs me on to achieve more.

What is your favourite thing to do to unwind?

I love to be around people, especially the people that I love! I always try to make time during the week to enjoy cooking and practising Vinyasa yoga. These are activities that help to centre myself.

Introducing Elisa L – Passionate Yogi

Elisa is one of our OM-tastic new yogis! She is a dedicated Vinyasa yoga teacher who is a strong believer in smiles, positive attitude and mindful practice. She always ensures a relaxing and positive environment to practice yoga through creative and mindful sequences.

What is it you love most about teaching yoga?

The possibility to make a difference in someone’s day, maybe someone’s life. I am able to spread the joy that yoga has given me and pass on the benefits of yoga whilst helping my students to reconnect in the present moment, relax and feel energised at the same time.

How do you de-stress after a long week?

The best way to recharge is to spend time with the ones that you love, doing simple things and enjoying time together.

How do you keep on top of your fitness whilst travelling?

I keep my yoga practice with me, yoga it’s a lifestyle and I always feel much better after a good yoga class.

What’s your top tip for a yoga newbie?

Yoga for beginners may be scary because they’re worried about not being able to do certain yoga positions. It is different for everyone and you are your own master who is in control of your body and mind and the teacher is there to guide you. Being flexible or being cool in the Asana (yoga poses) is not the aim of the practice. The aim is to find your space where you feel your body lengthening, creating more space for the Prana (energy) and releasing any tightness so the Prana can flow more freely.

Favourite yoga position?

I love inversions like headstand (Salamba Sirsasana) or tripod headstand (Sirsasana 2) as they relax and energise the mind, strengthens the whole body.

5 Workouts You Can Do Without Equipment

Woman doing home workout

Getting in shape doesn’t have to be complicated and there’s no need to spend hours sweating it out in the gym. Here are some simple moves to get fit and strong using your own body that you can do literally anywhere.

Exercising without equipment is easier than you think, simply set aside up to 20 mins a day and do each move one after the other for either 15 secs, 30, 45, or 1 minute back to back. Rest for 2 mins (or longer if you need it) before repeating the circuit up to three times. All you need is a bit of floor space and a good dose of mental strength. These moves are taken from ZUU (thezuu.com.au) and combine cardio and strength and conditioning meaning you get a total body workout, without having to pack a gym bag.

Don’t forget to warm up!

Take a few minutes to wake your body up before doing the workout below, try some lunges with an over head stretch and some high knees and jumping jacks will get your heart rate going.

  1. Frog squats

Stand upright with feet a little wider than shoulder width. Clasping hands together, tuck both upper arms in-between your legs as you lower into a deep squat position. Drive upwards out of a deep squat while keeping upper arms pinned against your inner thighs. The finish position will be legs slightly bent with arms still inside legs.

    2. Bears crawls (forward & reverse)

Start on all fours low to the ground with head upright, keeping back straight. Using opposite motor patterns reach forward with one arm and bring forward the opposite leg. Move forward in a crawling motion. Reverse bears is performing the exercise going backwards.

     3. Polar bear press

Position yourself into a strong ‘A’ frame position with hands shoulder width apart and feet slightly wider than shoulder width. Looking at the ground between your feet lower your top half towards the ground until your head touches then drive back up to the start position.

    4. Kick sits

Start with all fours on the ground with a low centre of gravity. Not moving your hands, sweep a leg in between the other hand and foot to a sitting position. Reverse by getting back up to start position and sweeping other leg through the opposite side.

    5. Donkeys

Start in a neutral push up position with feet together and hand shoulder width apart. Explode up and towards your chest with both legs into a tuck position. Then extend legs back to start position landing softly.

Remember if you have any health issues please talk to your doctor before doing this workout, and if your just starting out, take your time and modify the moves if you need to.

Introducing Personal Trainer and Parkour Fitness Specialist, Rowena R

Rowena is one of our most creative trainers, regularly practicing the art of parkour. She has a great understanding of how the body moves and like most great trainers, practices what she preaches on a daily basis.

What is your biggest client success story?
I worked with a weight loss client who managed to drop from a size 20 to a size 10 by changing her lifestyle and nutrition. When we started she was extremely self conscious and embarrassed by her low fitness levels. It was great to see her confidence grow as the months went by. Her posture improved, she treated herself to a new wardrobe and actually started to enjoy the sessions! She recently ran her first 10k and has progressed from a 20 second plank on her knees to a 90 second full plank.

What do you enjoy about being a part of the TruBe Team?
I love the philosophy behind the app and the fact it caters to today’s modern lifestyles. I love the use of functional exercise in the signature workouts as this is something I am very passionate about. I encourage all my clients to be strong for a reason! I also really enjoy teaching the barre workouts as I can draw upon my background as a professional dancer.

Your favourite piece of TruBe equipment?
The suspension trainer; as it’s so versatile and can be used both in and outdoors. It is great for core strength and adds an extra dimension to body weight training, enabling you to work through a greater range of motion without losing form.

What was your last health and fitness obstacle and how did you overcome it?
In September last year, I had surgery on both my knees and was on crutches for 2 months. This was a challenging time as I am normally so active. The surgery was quite invasive and I was left with a lot of scar tissue to work with but I was determined to make a full recovery. I’m happy to say the hard work paid off and I am now stronger than before and have a newly found confidence in my knees.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I lived in Cuba for 2 years, speak fluent Spanish and dance a mean salsa!

What is your favourite instagram account you follow?
GMB fitness – as they offer great tutorials

What is your favourite motivational quote?
Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.

What was your latest qualification?
Parkour UK ‘Parkour fitness Specialist’. Taking the principles of free running and parkour training into a fitness context.

How do you treat yourself?
With a pair of new workout leggings. I have a ridiculously large collection of colourful leggings, but there is always room for one more pair!

What is the best piece of advice you have received from a mentor?
If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you.

How do you find balance in your life?
I’ve learnt to be very strict about my days off work and rest days from training. Duvet day is sacred! It’s so important to take time out for myself and to give my body a chance to rest, yet not always easy to stick to. When I feel like I need a break I’ll take some time out for a walk by the river and a nice long stretch in the sun.
