Simon is a highly qualified and experienced personal trainer. He specialises in performance enhancement in pre/post natal, running, stretching and personal training exercises. Simon has many years of experience of working with a range of clients and has achieved a BSc in Pysiotherapy and an MSc in Neuromusculoskeletal Healthcare.
What is your background in Personal Training and how long have you been doing it?
I trained as a physiotherapist and graduated in 1996. For the first 8 years of my career, I completed my junior rotations in the NHS and then went into private practice as a neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapist. I had a career break to travel around the world from 2004-2006. On my return I went back to private practice and became the Clinical Director at Back in Action UK in London.
During this phase of my career, I started dealing with clients that had sustained a minor injury whilst training for a major event such as a marathon, a triathlon or an ultra event such as the Marathon des Sables. Once fit from their injury these clients then remained my clients as I oversaw their entire training programme including personal training. As word got around I started to see more and more non-injured clients who required this service.
This year I have decided to go it alone and founded Super Fit, specialising in personal training, case management for major physical challenges of the type previously described as well as rehabilitation for those clients recovering from long term and complex injuries. I am registered with the HCPC, the UK regulatory body for professions allied to health, with REPs, a regulatory body for personal trainers and other fitness industry professionals. I am also a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
What got you into specialising in pre/post natal exercises?
During my time as an outpatient neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapist, a proportion of clients were pregnant women or women who had recently given birth. They all had some kind of lower back/pelvic dysfunction with pain. My CPD reflected my client group so I became more educated in the pathologies associated with pregnancy and childbirth. As I started to specialise in personal training case management, it was clear that that approach could be applied to this client group as well.
I found I had an advantage in this area as I was well educated in the pathologies that these clients presented with as well as being expert on the effects of exercise on the body. Very recently I have successfully helped my wife with a specialised treatment/programme to recover from problems following the birth of our son, who is a year old very soon.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like attending live music gigs, sporting events such as Premier League Football and International Cricket. I also play the guitar and DJ a little as well as playing 11 a side football every Thursday night for the mighty Effra Academicals (with a lot of other training). I am lucky enough to have a great circle of friends and close family who company I enjoy immensely.
What is your favourite fitness brand and why?
I’ve always liked Adidas. The three stripes work visually and are now iconic. I find that their products last and although a little more expensive are worth the cost. However my running trainers are always Brooks and they are consistently fantastic.
